New Revelations on Trump’s Taxes Highlight How Senator Susan Collins’ Votes For Tax Giveaways to Corporations and the Wealthy Come at the Expense of Everyday Mainers
Portland, MAINE — Recent revelations on the extent of President Trump’s tax avoidance from the New York Times show the extent to which wealthy individuals can exploit regressive tax policy to avoid paying their fair share. Maine Senator Susan Collins’ record on voting for tax loopholes like those exploited by President Trump is clear. She has voted repeatedly for tax giveaways to corporations and wealthy Americans that enabled President Trump’s tax cheats, at the expense of everyday Mainers:
- Collins voted in 2009 for the legislation that President Trump exploited to claim over $70 million in retroactive tax write-offs (a move that is currently being audited by the IRS).
- Collins cast the key vote for the 2017 Republican tax cuts that provided a number of tax benefits that benefited the one percent, including Trump — even though it jeopardized Mainers access to healthcare by undermining the ACA
- Collins’ key vote for the 2017 tax giveaway also capped property tax deductions for everyday Mainers at 10% — while ensuring wealthy real estate investors, like Trump, are able to write off millions for their properties (and refused to support the HEROES Act, which would repeal the property tax cap).
- Collins was a proponent of the tax giveaways in the CARES Act that provided over $100 million in tax giveaways to corporations and the wealthy — including expanding a loophole that Trump, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, have exploited.
“Susan Collins has said she wants Mainers to judge her on her record. And when it comes to toeing the party line to cut taxes for corporations and the One Percent, her record is clear,” said Willy Ritch, executive director of 16 Counties Coalition. “Susan Collins isn’t worried about everyday Mainers who work hard and pay their taxes. Susan Collins has worked her entire career to ensure that wealthy Americans like President Trump who inherit their wealth and make bad business decisions can still profit, without paying their fair share.”
