Miriam G. Cummins

What office are you running for?

House District 15

With which party are you running for office?

Democratic Party

Election Date

November 3, 2020

Why are you running for office?

As an Albany resident for the last 9 years, I have witnessed a disconnection between the people and the House District 15. I believe that it is important to be in communication with the people in Albany, Tangent and Millersburg about what is happening in the House, and not just give personal opinion but to look at the facts. For the last 18 years, HD15 has been under one-party control, and many of us, like myself, do not feel that we are being represented.

Being an individual that finds value in making sure there is representation, and holding those representatives accountable, is something that HD15 needs right now. Low-income, immigrant, working, and struggling families need to have a voice in their Legislature and have their needs heard. I grew up in a family that had very limited means, and I understand how difficult it can be to find and have resources available. It is important that we have someone that represents us, that has had the same shared experiences and values. Not only am I asking you for your vote, but as your friend, I am asking you to let me be your advocate. I am going to listen to the people, and do what is right. Because we are a nation that is, of the people, by the people, for the people.

The three main issues that I will be addressing are: Education, Affordable Living, and Accessible/Affordable Child Care.

It takes a village to raise a child, so let’s all get together and come up with a solution!

What is the biggest issue facing your community and how do you propose helping?

Some of biggest issues that HD15 is facing are funding for education due to COVID-19, wages, unemployment, ensuring that we have accessible/affordable child care and affordable housing.

Who is your hero?

My heroes are Sonia Sotomayor, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Katie Porter

What are your hobbies?

Playing with my kids, playing Pokemon Go (journey to becoming a Pokemon Master), all things nerdy (Star Wars, Marvel Cinematic Universe), Harry Potter (I am a Slytherin), playing video games on the Nintendo Switch and Xbox, painting (rocks), and crafting and using my Cricut machine.

What is the most recent book you read?

Finished reading How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi. Now currently reading White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo.

Do you have any kids/pets/talking houseplants?

Yes. Two kids, Isabela and Mateo. We also have two pets, Tux (Schnoodle) and Roxy (cat).
