Candidate Name:

Carol Ann Johnson

What office are you running for?

Pender County Board of Education

With which party are you running for office?

Democratic Party

Election Date

November 3, 2020

Why are you running for office?

I am running because I believe our elected officials have lost sight of our educational system. For many years, now and when I was teaching, I heard politicians say “ Schools are Broken” Yet I saw few elected officials in my classroom or in my school. Every year I received fewer and fewer resources that I could actually use. I finally realized that schools were not broken it was actually that government was broken. Schools were delivering outstanding outcomes based on what they had to work with. Recently, I realized the only way to make a meaningful change was to do something and run for office.

What is the biggest issue facing your community and how do you propose helping?

Equality of Education. Equality of Education does not mean that we provide the same resources to each school. It means customizing education based on the needs of the individual community. For example, transportation issues and more schools are paramount on the east side of Pender County where the population density is growing at an astonishing rate. On the western side of Pender County, we see a greater need for Internet accessibility and health resources. Making each community successful requires that we work with local leaders to deal with local issues.

How do we fix the partisan divide in our country and start working together again?

Teaching is nonpartisan as a rule. As an educator, I always based my decisions on one question: Is this in the best interest of the children I serve? If the answer was “yes” I knew that the success rate would be high. As a leader, partisan politics in education is counterproductive to this goal and we must question the motivations behind any individual who makes decisions based on any other paradigms.
