Candidate Name:

Mark D Welch

What office are you running for?

United States Congress – South Carolina 3

With which party are you running for office?

Democratic Party

Election Date

Primary June 9th General Election Nov 3rd

Why are you running for office?

I taught high school and college courses in American Government for 22 years. What we are seeing lately, ain’t it. I think that if we don’t start working together – seeking the common ground that can lead to a consensus, then we are in real trouble. If we cannot agree on the empirical evidence and think rationally to find a way forward, I do NOT know how our democracy survives. I could not stand on the sidelines and watch this happen.

What is the biggest issue facing your community and how do you propose helping?

The inequity of our economic system is undermining the general welfare of our society and the democratic principles of our government. The rich oligarchy continues to slant to slant the playing field further and further in their favor. We cannot meet the challenges of the future nor reach our full potential under these conditions.

How do we fix the partisan divide in our country and start working together again?

Our campaign slogan is – Let’s be American First ! We have to listen to and empathize with those with whom we disagree – and realize in our American democracy, that they have just as much right to their opinion as we do. I think that if we talk with each other we can agree on the empirical evidence and then begin to rationally seek out our common ground. It won’t be easy, but i am convinced that the majority of Americans do NOT live on the extremes, and that if we just talk with each other, face-to-face, we can rediscover that.

Who is your hero?

I don’t have a hero, but there are a number of people by whom i am inspired – Fritz Hollings, Isaac Asimov, my father

What are your hobbies?

cycling, white water rafting & kayaking, hangliding, stained glass, home remodeling, thought-provoking books and movies

What is the most recent book you read?

I recently reread Damien by Herman Hesse

Do you have any kids/pets/talking houseplants?

I have a menagerie of birds, hummingbirds, squirrels, chipmunks, and raccoons, with the occasional turkey, wild boar, hawk family and even more rarely a bear.

How can our readers get involved in your campaign?

We are still fleshing out our campaign. If you would like to get involved, please sign up on the website and we will immediately get in touch to see if we can match you talents and interests to some purpose in our efforts to unseat Jeff Duncan – and thanks.
