Judy Stahl (Arizona)
Candidate’s Preferred Pronouns
What office are you running for?
Arizona State House for Legislative District 1
With which party are you running for office?
Primary (if necessary) August 4, 2020; General election, November 3, 2020.
Why are you running for office?
I am running for office to bring a strong voice for Democratic values to the AZ State House. Arizona only needs to flip two House seats out of the total of 60 seats, to turn Arizona’s House blue and take back the leadership for the first time since the 1960’s. I am just the woman to do it. I have support from people of good will across my district. People here believe in me. Even people with a different political point of view have said, “Judy, you and I have different political views, but I know you believe in what you are doing. And I believe in you.”
I will win.
My hashtag is #StahlForAll. I am #TheCommonGroundCandidate, willing to have a civil conversation with anyone to move our district and our state forward. My district is ready to elect me. My campaign is the hope of many people, not just Democrats! This district has been majority red for a long time and has gotten progressively more toxic since the tea party came along. Now, people here want to get away from that toxic politics. They are looking for sanity, decency, and humanity in their elected leaders and the ability to work together to get things done for Arizona. My ‘on fire’ campaign will certainly help Mark Kelly to win, and vice versa.
What is the biggest issue facing your community and how do you propose helping?
The biggest issue facing my community is the lack of balanced representation. One party has been running this district and our state for many years. The 2016 presidential election result has emboldened an element of this district’s constituents in an alarming way. We have a huge number of persuadable voters in our district and this is the year to welcome them into our tent. Timing is everything and 2020 is our year to put a Democrat in the State House so that the state legislature can begin to fairly represent Arizonans. Once elected, I will represent everyone in my district without ever compromising on my Democratic values.
How do we fix the partisan divide in our country and start working together again?
We fix that divide by communicating with each other in a civil manner with a commitment to solve the problems before us. I have the background, the skills, and the platform to make a huge difference when elected in Arizona. My district, AZ LD1, has a huge number of persuadable voters. My campaign in this historically red district is the on the front lines of political transformation in Arizona, the crest of the blue wave. Folks here know me. They know that I will work on behalf of all and be a strong voice for Democratic values in the state house.
Who is your hero?
A mother who travels thousands of miles by foot with her small children to give them a better life. Marie Yovanovitch. Sally Yates. Christine Blasey Ford. Elizabeth Warren.
What are your hobbies?
I am a swimmer and a runner. I am a singer. I love to cook.
What is the most recent book you read?
Becoming by Michelle Obama
Do you have any kids/pets/talking houseplants?
I have two adult children. I currently have one 18 year old Maine Coon cat. No dogs at this time but we have had dogs since my children were little. I have house plants including a 3-year old orchid for which I do nothing special that is currently blooming profusely for probably the fourth or fifth time.
How can our readers get involved in your campaign?
Ours is a grassroots campaign. It takes resources to fuel this campaign. We accept donations from an legal donor. My district is big geographically. Social media marketing is an essential tool to reach the high number of persuadable voters throughout the district. Readers can amplify my campaign to all Arizonans and beyond, knowing that my campaign plays a pivotal role in winning Arizona for the Democrats. My election will have significant influence on the political climate in Arizona and the nation.
