What’s the difference between Poll Worker & Poll Watcher?

Poll Worker:
Nonpartisan, Paid (Clerks, Judges, Inspectors, Checker, Precinct Worker)

Poll Watcher:
Partisan, Volunteer (Observers, Monitors, Challengers)

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To be a poll worker (Poll Clerk, Precinct Tech, Precinct Deputy, Inside Deputy, EVid Operator, Ballot Box Inspector, Ballot Distributor): Must be a registered voter in the county, 18+ or pre-registered and 16+, must attend training. You must also be able to read and write the English language. Bi-lingual speakers (especially those who speak Spanish) are encouraged to apply. Up to $400. 

HOW POLL WORKERS ARE CHOSEN

At least 20 days before election the County Supervisor of Elections appoints Election Board, comprised of clerks and inspectors, for each precinct. No election board can consist solely of members of one party.

POLL WATCHER INFO

Each political party and each candidate may have one watcher in each polling room or early voting area at any one time during the election. A political committee formed for the specific purpose of expressly advocating the passage or defeat of an issue on the ballot may have one watcher for each polling room or early voting area at any one time during the election. Each poll watcher shall be a qualified and registered elector of the county in which he or she serves. 

Who is Authorized to Challenge a Voter’s Eligibility on Election Day?

Any registered elector or poll watcher of a county may challenge the right of a person to vote in that county.
