Candidate Name: Annie Garcia

What office are you running for?
U.S. Senate
With which party are you running for office?
Democratic Party
Election Date
Primary 3/3/2020
Why are you running for office?
I am running because the stakes are incredibly high, we are running out of time and I don’t see a candidate that is willing or able to lean into the chaos and throw out the old rulebook of politics-as-usual, which I believe is needed to win. We have to embrace American diversity and inspire new voters to support us, rather than take the complacent strategy of relying on people’s dissatisfaction with the GOP and identifying us as the lesser of two evils. And to overcome the cynicism with politics and politicians, we must speak authentically and truthfully, head-on into uncomfortable topics, and fight for people who have been sacrificed in favor of corporate money, greed and power.
What is the biggest issue facing your community and how do you propose helping?
Not fair. How can I possibly value the life of a medically fragile child whose parents don’t have health insurance over the baby who is separated from her mother seeking asylum at our border, the young black man sentenced to death who never got a fair trial to the young woman whose rapist is deemed to fragile to serve time, the servicewoman who no longer gets a pension to the teacher who is underpaid? The world is literally and figuratively on fire. It’s like asking which of my 3 children would I save. I am running because the only solution to any of these issues is for government to better mirror and thus represent the diversity of America based on sex, gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, age and ever other meaningful way we can be grouped, to right the power imbalance that currently allows the “haves” to harvest the ever-diminishing resources and wealth of the “have-nots” for their own financial gain.
How do we fix the partisan divide in our country and start working together again?
For starters, we figure out a way to hold Fox News accountable for their dissemination of misinformation. We also start enforcing our laws and stop applying different standards of accountability to government officials and the rich. Democrats must take back the executive and legislative branches and review all judicial appointments for grounds to impeach based on existing laws. Simply put, we cannot give Republicans a pass for their immoral- if not outright illegal- behavior that has been escalating since the Nixon presidency but surged in the last 10 years. In short, we have to WIN!
Who is your hero?
Ann Richards, Molly Ivans, Barbara Jordan
What are your hobbies?
I love anything food-related- cooking, baking, and especially eating. I love Spanish red wine (so drinking), and I am an exercise fanatic (it replaced cigarettes about 10 years ago). I also love travel and learning languages.
What is the most recent book you read?
Girls Can Be Anything. It’s on the nightly rotation.
Do you have any kids/pets/talking houseplants?
I have 3 fantastic kiddos, Hugo (6), Ari (5) and Rafa (3). I also have a 5-lb teacup poodle, Dax. He thinks he is a standard poodle, but the squirrels set him straight.
