Candidate Name: Maite Salazar

What office are you running for?
MO-05 US Congressional Representative
With which party are you running for office?
Democratic Party
Election Date
Primary August 4, 2020
Why are you running for office?
My opponent is a centrist, corporate Democrat who does not support progressive policies, misses almost twice the votes of the average representative, and only introduced one bill last session. We need new representation who lives and works within the community, who is dedicated to being a strong voice in Congress.
What is the biggest issue facing your community and how do you propose helping?
Poverty. I say we forgive small farm loans, and never require them to pay FEMA back. We need to be connecting them with areas that have food deserts or those who are food insecure. We need more government housing, and a rent cap. Here in Kansas City, we will soon have a Tenant Rights Bill, which I would like to be federal. We also need penitentiary reform, and programs to support people in their personal growth. Medicare for All will relieve much of the stress on everyone in the district.
How do we fix the partisan divide in our country and start working together again?
We work to shift society to a greater capacity of humanism, and help each other recognize that we all must work for the same basic goals of human preservation.
Who is your hero?
My heroes are the community activists I work with every day.
What are your hobbies?
I have a wide variety of hobbies from playing and listening to music, doing vaudeville performances, writing poetry, and renovating houses/antiques.
What is the most recent book you read?
Race, Real Estate, and Uneven Development: The Kansas City Experience, 1900-2000 by Kevin Fox Gotham
Do you have any kids/pets/talking houseplants?
One Husky/Shep mix named Miska, a Sheprador named Pacho, and a sly little bob-tail Siamese named Cagney, who is the loudest of them all. All rescues, and they all sleep with me.
