What office are you running for?
OH-15 Congressional District

With which party are you running for office?
Democratic Party

Election Date
11/3/2020

Why are you running for office?
For far too long I have watched the people I have lived and worked with get left behind. The economy is no longer working for them. Drugs are running rampant through the communities. College students are putting off their life goals because their dream of a college education leads to crippling student loan debt. Farmers are getting hurt from climate change and terrible foreign policy. The people of the OH-15 need someone who is from them and understands their plights. I am that candidate. I grew up and attended high school in the district, I went to college in the district, I lived in the district while going to law school, and now I am building a life in the district. The district is large and gerrymandered, but they gerrymandered my life into this district. I am running for office, because this district deserves someone who understands and cares for the people of this district and I am that person.

What is the biggest issue facing your community and how do you propose helping?
This district is so gerrymandered that it has so many different issues. It has the big city, flat farm lands, and parts of the Appalachian Mountains. The District has been left behind from the current Representative so many issues still exist. This District requires dedication to the local economy, a focus on the environment, a rededication to farmers, a real solution to the drug problem in the community, a real solution to the student debt problem, and the district needs a Representative that wants to dedicate an effort to solving the healthcare issue instead of repealing it. Therefore, I will help bring back jobs to the region by sponsoring a bill for better infrastructure and the installation of broadband internet. Further, I will promote developing green jobs in the District because its time Ohio is on the forefront of progress instead of being left behind. I want to fund more drug treatment programs and promote building drug treatment facilities. I want to expand the markets for farmers so one country dispute will not hurt their market. I want to promote tax incentives for farmers to increase environmentally friendly farmer technics. I want to eliminate student debt; first, by eliminating the interest the government applies to loans so borrowers can actually pay on the principle, second, by promoting the increase of funding to state institutions, and finally, eliminating student debt through programs that trade public service for loan payment. I want to expand and codify the ACA as we know it. Then I want to promote the development of a plan that moves us towards a single payer system.

How do we fix the partisan divide in our country and start working together again?
I do not think partisanship is the REAL issue. The real issue is trust. People need to trust each other and believe that each political opinion is created in the hope that everyone wants what is best for America. I think that fact that I am of the people of the OH-15 Congressional District will help solve this trust issue. The people in the district will know they can trust me because I’m from them. From there, I want to start talking with the members of another party. I might not agree but building a relationship, based on trust, will help end the partisan divide.

Who is your hero?
My hero is Senator Sherrod Brown. He understands workers and is a great progressive. He can speak to Democrats and Republicans. I believe my policy and approach is similar to Senator Brown.

What are your hobbies?
I enjoy building things for my house, almost every sport, and I love to snowboard. I also like to read before bed.

What is the most recent book you read?
Non fiction:
Doing Justice by Preet Bharara
Alexander Hamilton (Still Reading) by Ron Chernow
Fiction:
A Storm of Swords (Still Reading) by George RR Martin

Do you have any kids/pets/talking houseplants?
No, but I have promised to get my partner a dog after this campaign regardless of the outcome. I also brought home a plant a few months ago that seems to be thriving as much as succulents can.

How can our readers get involved in your campaign?
Readers can get involved by going to www.joelnewby.com/jobs. They can volunteer or apply for a job there.

What question do you wish we’d asked, and what is your answer?
What is our greatest foreign relations issue?
We currently underfund and understaff the state department. We must choose to fund and rebuild the State Department. A strong State Department prevents war and provides prosperity across all nations. We must end the hurtful tariffs and pass legislation to promote the creation of a pacific alliance to counter Chinese influence. We can counter Russian influence by backing our allies and promoting an economic solution to halt Russian aggression. It is critical that we work with regional leaders to constrain North Korea and promote South Korea’s influence in the region. We can provide strategic funding support for Central American countries to promote economic growth and expansion of the US market into those countries. Diplomacy through the State Department is essential to an effective government.
