Meet the Candidate: Bruce Fischer, Ph.D. (South Carolina)

4 mins read

Candidate Name: Bruce Fischer, Ph.D.

What office are you running for?
SC House of Representatives District 56

With which party are you running for office?
Democratic Party

Election Date
November 3, 2020

Why are you running for office?
Current government officials at all levels seem to have forgotten that they work for the people. I am saddened, sickened and disgusted that the State of South Carolina has chosen NOT to expand MEDICAID coverage to some 250,000 citizens who are in desperate need of access to healthcare, and would be eligible. Thousands are dying. As a retired psychologist, I know the impact of such abandonment. Nobody seems to care about the needs, hopes and dreams of everyday citizens. I want to be the voice that speaks truth to power, and votes that way. This and so many other issues that directly impact real people’s lives need to be addressed. I am a people-person, and I genuinely care.

What is the biggest issue facing your community and how do you propose helping?
In addition to healthcare, we in the coastal areas of South Carolina face true risks posed to our environment. We have, so far, resisted efforts to do offshore seismic testing for oil and gas, and subsequent drill for those fossil fuels. We have seen over the past four years how susceptible we are to flooding, while the powers that be turn a blind eye to the threat to our safety, by allowing overdevelopment and damaging our natural barriers to flooding by allowing building in wetlands and swamps. A pristine environment is what sustains our tourism based economy, and cannot be allowed to be damaged, or to deteriorate. We need legislation on a state level to control development without destroying that part of the economic engine.

How do we fix the partisan divide in our country and start working together again?
We can start with civility, and actually listening to one another, with an eye toward seeking some common ground. In years past (seems like ancient history), legislators did seek compromise within reason. My hope is that we can resurrect that process.

Who is your hero?
Right now, Elizabeth Warren.

What are your hobbies?
It used to be golf, before I got in to electoral politics. Now, who has the time?

What is the most recent book you read?
“Elizabeth Warren” by Antonia Felix

Do you have any kids/pets/talking houseplants?
Two grown children, and a 6 month old granddaughter. None of my houseplants talk, but I seem to have acquired a “pet” tree frog who has taken up residence among my pineapple plants.

How can our readers get involved in your campaign?
Volunteers are always welcome. There are a lot of doors to knock, and a lot of phone calls to make. There is always the issue of finances. Money can be hard to come by in my Republican state, especially as presidential and senatorial candidates are clamoring for it. I would also love to have people simply help to get my name and platform out there. Folks can go toy website and sign up for my newsletter.

What question do you wish we’d asked, and what is your answer?
I wish you had asked if I am a veteran.
Yes I am. I served in the Army as a helicopter pilot and instructor, and served one tour in Vietnam, in 1968.
