What office are you running for?
Miami-Dade County Commissioner

With which party are you running for office?
Non-partisan Election

Election Date
August 2020

Why are you running for office?
I am Sybrina Fulton, mother of Travyon Martin – and now I am running to be your champion for justice.

Our government is ignoring the crisis that many of us confront daily: unsafe schools, unaffordable housing and finding good paying jobs. Anyone who knows me trusts that I will be your champion for change in Miami-Dade County.

Now more than ever we need to fight for safer schools & communities by eliminating the grip that the NRA and Marion Hammer has on our state and our local government. From our schools to our streets; we need comprehensive background checks, a gun registry and must ban assault rifles and weapons of war that are wreaking havoc on our children and families.

Ultimately, I am running for Miami-Dade County Commissioner because it’s time for a change. Transportation and traffic are a nightmare, the cost of living in Miami-Dade is skyrocketing, and in some places, people are reasonably concerned about gun violence. It is time for bold, systemic change that undoes the status quo and makes it easier for working families to get ahead — not just barely get by.

  • I will be your champion for justice in the voting booth, because everyone has the right to vote.
  • I will be your champion for a world with fewer guns.
  • I will be your champion for affordable housing.
  • I will be your champion for an education system that works for everyone.
  • I will be your champion for creating high paying jobs because you should only have to work ONE job to make ends meet.

I know this challenge won’t be easy. The forces invested in maintaining the status quo have already dumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into my opponent’s campaign. But that’s why I am so glad to have you, the activist community on my side. We may not have millions of dollars at our disposal to give to candidates who share our values, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned on this journey, it is that when all of us do a our part, we can make a huge difference.

What is the biggest issue facing your community and how do you propose helping?
Gun Violence. I have spent the past several years traveling the world learning about and advocating for criminal justice reform and gun safety. I have met and grieved with dozens of mothers whose families have been victims of gun violence. Our movement has taken on a life of its own, and we are creating real positive change and I couldn’t feel more energized.
