What office are you running for?
South Carolina Senate District 41

With which party are you running for office?
Democratic Party

Election Date

Why are you running for office?
To quote Dr. Suess’ The Lorax, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing’s going to get better. It’s not.” We teach generations of children to believe in a world that can be better, to fight for equality and justice, and to create a greater future for everyone. I have spent two years volunteering for and helping to lead the Democratic Party here in Charleston. I believe in a greater future for my community and my state, one where a great education is accessible to all, where justice is fair and true, where women’s rights are defended, and where our environment is protected for generations to come. It is time for a new generation of leadership to create that future, and I am ready to help.

What is the biggest issue facing your community and how do you propose helping?
We have a myriad of issues that need work such as education reform, women’s healthcare, and criminal justice reform, but irresponsible development and flooding is one of the most pressing problems we currently have. Development of wetlands and floodplains has lead to an infrastructure crisis wherein the water has nowhere to go during heavy rains or high tides. Rising sea levels and climate change is a global issue larger than South Carolina that affects the Lowcountry intimately, but the rampant development is an issue that we can address locally.

We need a moratorium on development of these wetlands, and we need to focus future development on higher ground. We also need to return some of this claimed land back to its original status as wetland. There are many areas of West Ashley that are already built upon but are falling derelict, and these can be revitalized for future development.

Who is your hero?
Serena Williams! I have been a tennis fan since birth, and I have always admired her tenacity, her triumph against adversity, and her refusal to ever give up.

What are your hobbies?
I love sports- I play in a community flag football league, golf, tennis, and beach volleyball.

Do you have any kids/pets/talking houseplants?
I have a dog named Oliver! He is a 2 year old border collie mix.
