Wed 10/9: The Governor’s deadline to sign laws is THIS SUNDAY! (4) HUGE actions!

Action #1 – EMERGENCY!!! Ask the Governor to sign AB 342 – “No New Oil Leases Act.” Oil pumps coming to a neighborhood near you!

On Friday, while we were tranfixed by the political soap opera which is now our presidency, the Trump administration announced it would make 725,000 acres in California’s central coast open to oil and gas lease sales, ending a five-year moratorium. The BLM, ignoring 400 public comments and scientific research to facilitate the administration’s “energy dominion” policy, is now putting both the land, wildlife and people in Alameda, Contra Costa, Fresno, Merced, Monterey, San Benito, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Stanislaus Counties at increased risk of toxic pollution.

The BLM is also looking closer to home with a proposal to conduct new oil and gas development on 1.6 million acres of public land in an area which covers Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, San Luis ObispoSanta Barbara, Tulare and Ventura counties, includes about 400,000 acres of public land and 1.2 million acres of federal mineral estate, according to the report.

Let’s make this as hard as possible. State lawmakers passed AB 342  to deter companies from drilling on federal land. The bill would prohibit the construction of new oil and gas infrastructure on state land if it is being built to support production of oil and natural gas upon protected federal lands and is sitting on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk since 9/12.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [city name] and I want Governor Newsom to sign AB 342 to stop new oil leases on state land. He’s already vetoed SB-1, which would have helped protect us from Trump’s environmental protection rollbacks. He needs to do the right thing NOW!

Action #2 – Stop being such babies, CA legislature. OVERRIDE NEWSOM’s veto of SB-1!

These are extraordinary times and now is not the moment for our state legislature to allow our governor to veto SB-1. The last time a governor’s veto was overridden was in the 1980’s under Jerry Brown. Who cares! We’ve never had a president with such a vendetta against our state before. He will poison our water, land and air, and our most vulnerable, including children will suffer. SB-1 was our best bet to stop him. 2/3rds of the both houses could do it. Tell your legislators to be in that number.

Minimal script for both assemblymembers & state senators: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Assemblymember/Senator [___] to override Governor Newsom’s veto of SB-1. We expect the Assemblymember/Senator to do what’s necessary to save our environment from a president who actively wants to harm us.Contacts:

Action #3 – Ask the Governor to sign AB 1282 – “No Private ICE Act”

AB 1282 will prohibit the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), our state prison system, from facilitating or allowing private security corporations to conduct immigration enforcement arrests of individuals in CDCR custody.  Currently, private security corporations, specifically notorious global private prison corporation G4S, conduct about 1/3 of the immigration arrests of individuals who have earned their release from CDCR and are subjecting them to inhumane conditions on ICE’s behalf without legal authority to make arrests.

Minimal script: My name is [___], and I am calling to urge Governor Newsom to sign AB 1282, the ‘No Private ICE’ Act. I support AB 1282 because this bill protects immigrants who have earned their release from state prison from being unlawfully arrested by private prison contractors paid by ICE. California should not allow private corporations to profit off of mass deportations.

Action #4 – Call the Governor about the bills on to his desk NOW waiting for his signature.

Oct. 13 – Sunday is the last day for Governor Newsom to sign or veto bills. Our current battlefield is listed below, and while there are plenty of dead bodies, there are still a lot of great bills waiting for a signature before the deadline.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [city name] and I want Governor Newsom to sign [Bill(s) # – pick your favorites from the BLUE bills below].

Example: “I’m calling from 93003 and I want Governor Newsom to sign AB 1254 to protect the bobcats.”
