Candidate Name: Paige Kreisman
What office are you running for?
Oregon House of Representatives, District 42
With which party are you running for office?
May 19, 2020
Why are you running for office?
I’m running because I am exhausted by the endless neoliberal austerity policies from our Democrat super majority held state government. This last legislative session in Oregon we saw:
A “rent control” bill that capped annual rent increases at 7% + CPI (10.3% for 2019), and was filled with loopholes and exemptions for the landlord lobby.
A $2 billion school funding package, touted as historic, that only raised enough revenue to maintain schools at their current funding, plus an additional $200 million. $4 billion was needed to meet the standards of the quality education model. Also in the bill was an amendment that preempts cities, counties, and districts from taxing commercial activities (gross receipts, and value added taxes). This is a direct handout to big business that was openly negotiated between the legislative leadership and Oregon Business and Industries, the largest business lobbying group in the state.
We saw an already weak and watered down cap and trade bill, that would not have been adequate to address our climate crisis, get killed by Democrats in response to a GOP walk out.
Most shamefully, we saw our Democrat super majority, elected in large part with the support of teachers, and nurses vote to cut public employee pensions.
This is unacceptable. This is even more unacceptable coming from Democrats. If we cannot fight for nurses, teachers, students, unions, tenants, and our planet, then who will? The Republicans certainly wont. We have a deep rot here in the Democratic Party of Oregon. Our state legislators are more concerned with enriching the 1% than they are serving the working class people of this state.
This should not be a surprise though. Oregon is one of only 6 states that allow unlimited corporate campaign contributions, and as a result we have the second most expensive elections per capita in the country (behind NJ). There are no sitting state legislators in Oregon that do not accept corporate money. We aim to change that.
We will fight for:
- An Oregon Green New Deal
- Campaign Finance Reform
- Housing Justice
- Defending our public employees and unions
and we will do it all without taking a single dollar in corporate money.
What is the biggest issue facing your community and how do you propose helping?
The Climate Crisis. Once elected I will be the youngest member of the Oregon legislature. I’m not running because that title excites me. I’m running because I have no choice. I’m running because our planet is on fire, and the status quo leadership that brought us here will not save it. It’s time for us to build a world that places people and planet above corporate profits. Here in Oregon we will do that with an Oregon Green New Deal.
- A moratorium on new fossil fuel infrastructure, and phasing out our existing fossil fuel infrastructure.
- Strong regulation for healthy, breathable air.
- 100% community-owned renewable energy.
- Regulation for sustainable farming and forestry practices.
- Massive investments in public transportation that is clean energy powered, and fareless.
- Protecting communities already impacted by the climate crisis.
- Funding for a just transition – job training, education, and salary guarantee for workers impacted by industry shifts in the death of the fossil fuel industry.
This is the bare minimum of what Oregonians deserve. Oregonians deserve a planet that we can not only live on, but thrive on. That is what the Oregon Green New Deal will achieve.
How do we fix the partisan divide in our country and start working together again?
I reject the premise that the Republican party needs to be rehabilitated. This is the party that has sold out our country to foreign interests. This is the party that is operating concentration camps in America. This is the party that seeks to deny basic human rights to their own neighbors. We do not need to negotiate or work together with Republicans. We need to defeat Republicans. Here in Oregon we have a Democratic super majority in both chambers of the legislature, and a Democrat Governor. It’s time for us to unapologetically fight for the working class people of this state. If that means the Oregon GOP is left behind, then we will leave them behind.
Who is your hero?
My hero is Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. I have never been inspired by a leader like I am inspired by Ilhan. Her resolve to fight for us, and to fight for ALL of us, in the face of such vile and widespread bigotry and hatred personally directed at her, is nothing short of heroic.
Do you have any kids/pets/talking houseplants?
I have a dog, named Basi. She is an 8 year old black lab who I love like a child.
How can our readers get involved in your campaign?
We are challenging an incumbent, with near unlimited corporate funding. He is backed by the fossil fuel lobby, the landlord/realtor lobby, and the private healthcare lobby.
My only constituent is the working class people of Oregon. That is why we will not accept corporate donations, but we cannot fight this fight without the help of everyday working people. You can donate to our 100% people powered campaign at Paige2020.com.
